Trump Claims Assad ‘Fled’ Syria After Losing Russia’s Support

Trump

Donald Trump, the US president-elect, declared on Sunday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had “fled his country” after losing the support of Russia.

Trump made his statement on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing that Russia, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, no longer had any interest in defending Assad. “Assad is gone,” Trump declared, signaling a major shift in the geopolitical landscape of Syria.

The claim came as Syrian rebels reported a significant and unprecedented development—marking the end of Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year-long rule.

In their first announcement on state television, the rebels declared the termination of Assad’s authoritarian reign following a swift and surprise military offensive that took the global community by storm.

This dramatic development has left the situation in Syria in a state of flux, with questions about the future direction of the conflict.

According to a senior Syrian officer who spoke to Reuters, Syria’s army command had informed its officers that Assad’s regime had effectively collapsed.

Despite this claim, the Syrian army later insisted that military operations were ongoing against “terrorist groups” in regions such as Hama, Homs, and Deraa countryside, suggesting that military activity in Syria remains uncertain.

Reports from two senior army officers indicated that Assad had left Damascus earlier on Sunday, flying to an unknown destination. This development coincides with reports from the Syrian rebels, who claimed to have entered the capital without encountering significant military opposition.

This sudden advance represents a striking blow to Assad’s regime, which has spent years consolidating its power by suppressing dissent.

Amid this dramatic shift, Syrian rebels celebrated with their supporters in Damascus, notably at a major square where thousands gathered to chant “Freedom.”

They specifically referenced Sednaya prison, a large military detention facility on the outskirts of Damascus where the Syrian government detained thousands of political prisoners.

Witnesses reported that the celebrations were jubilant as citizens celebrated the symbolic end of decades of repression under the Assad regime.

This event marks a significant turning point in Syria’s long-standing civil war and reflects the shifting alliances and power dynamics in the region.

The collapse of Assad’s rule, if confirmed, could pave the way for unpredictable political and military developments in the coming months.
