Trump can end Russia-Ukraine war soon, says Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed confidence that the administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will accelerate the resolution of Ukraine’s war with Russia.

In an interview with public broadcaster Suspilne on Friday, Zelenskyy discussed Ukraine’s relationship with the U.S. and recalled past conversations with Trump about resolving the conflict, which has been ongoing since 2022.

“Trump has understood the foundation of our stance. I have not heard anything from him that opposes our position,” Zelenskyy stated.

When asked whether Trump had pressured Ukraine to negotiate with Russia, Zelenskyy firmly emphasized his country’s sovereignty. “We are an independent nation,” he said. “Throughout this war, both our people and I have demonstrated—through negotiations with the U.S., including both Trump and Biden and with European leaders—that the ‘sit and listen’ approach does not work with us.”

Zelenskyy expressed optimism that Trump’s leadership could lead to a quicker end to the conflict. “I believe that under Trump, the war will end sooner,” he said.

The president stressed the importance of achieving a fair and lasting peace. “We need to secure a just peace, one that ensures we do not feel the loss of our finest people was the result of imposed injustice,” he explained. “The war will end, but no one can specify an exact date.”

Zelenskyy also highlighted the significance of the incoming administration’s policies. “With the approach of the team now set to lead the White House, the war will undoubtedly end sooner. This is their strategy, their commitment to their public, and it holds great importance for them,” he concluded.
