The US Commerce Department is contemplating a ban on Chinese software in autonomous and connected vehicles, citing national security concerns.
The US Commerce Department is poised to propose a ban on Chinese software in autonomous and connected vehicles in the upcoming weeks, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The Biden administration aims to introduce a rule prohibiting Chinese software in vehicles with Level 3 automation and higher, effectively banning the testing of autonomous vehicles from Chinese companies on US roads.
Additionally, in a previously unreported decision, the administration plans to propose restricting vehicles equipped with advanced wireless communication modules developed in China from operating in the US, the sources noted.
Under the proposal, automakers and suppliers would be required to confirm that none of their connected or advanced autonomous vehicle software originates from a “foreign entity of concern,” such as China.
