Indian Police are looking for a teacher accused of beating a Dalit student to death over a spelling mistake.
The death of Dalit student sparked violent protests in India.
Nikhil Dohre, a student, was hit with a rod and kicked until he fell unconscious by his high school teacher after misspelling the word “social” in an exam, father of the deceased told police.
The 15-year-old died from his injuries on Monday at a hospital in northern Uttar Pradesh state, while the accused teacher fled the area.
Police official Mahendra Pratap Singh told media that the accused was on the run, but police will arrest him soon.
The Dalit community – formerly known as the “untouchables” – is considered the lowest rung of India’s caste system. The community has been subjected to prejudice and discrimination for centuries. Violent protests broke out in Auraiya district, the location of the attack, while the protesters demanded the teacher’s arrest before the cremation of the boy’s body.
