In the northern Italian Alps, an avalanche caused by the melting of a glacier has resulted in at least six fatalities. Nine additional persons were hurt in the collapse, according to emergency personnel, with two of them having critical injuries. Throughout the night, rescue crews have been searching for the 19 people who are still missing utilising helicopters and drones. The region’s tallest peak, Marmolada, was seen to have an ice mass collapse down its slopes in video of the occurrence.
Several roped parties were there when an avalanche of snow, ice, and rock hit the access road; several of them were washed away.
The injured hikers were transported to a number of hospitals in the neighbourhood, according to rescue personnel, with one still in critical condition.
It’s not immediately obvious what led to the serac—a part of the glacier—collapsing.
However, Walter Milan, a spokesman for the rescue organisation, told state television that temperatures in the region have been particularly high lately.
It is noted that temperatures recently hit 10C near the glacier’s crest and declared, “The heat is unprecedented.” Further, it is declared, “That’s severe heat.” “There’s something weird about it,”
According to reports, “the global heat, which causes glaciers to melt,” is to blame for the glacier’s retreat.
