Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned amid ongoing student protests and has traveled to India, where her challenges have only intensified.
The Awami League leader is now facing increased difficulties as the United States has revoked her visa and the United Kingdom has denied her asylum request.
According to Indian media, Sheikh Hasina’s initial stop in India may lead to London, where she could seek political asylum or consider Finland as an alternative destination.
Initially, it was expected that she would remain in a secure location in India until she received a British visa to apply for asylum in the UK. However, reports now suggest that newly elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declined to grant her asylum upon her arrival, citing the country’s asylum policies.
Under the new regulations, asylum seekers are required to temporarily reside in another country where their conduct and reasons for seeking asylum are evaluated before they can be granted political asylum in the UK. Consequently, the UK has currently refused to provide asylum to Sheikh Hasina.
Additionally, Indian media have reported that the United States has canceled Sheikh Hasina’s visa, although there has been no official comment from the US regarding this issue.
Yesterday, a US State Department spokesperson stated during a press briefing that the US stands in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.
The Modi administration, maintaining its relationship with Sheikh Hasina’s previous government, has allowed her to remain in India until she secures political asylum in another country.
