Engineer Saleh Al Jasser, the Saudi Arabian Minister of Transport and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), has launched a trial of self-driving flying taxis at the holy sites, marking a significant advancement in transportation for Hajj pilgrims.
This inaugural trial of the electric air taxi, witnessed by GACA President Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, is notable as the world’s first air taxi licensed by a civil aviation authority. The aircraft demonstrated vertical take-off capabilities, highlighting its innovative design and functionality.
The air taxi services aim to enhance the comfort and efficiency of Hajj pilgrimages by transporting pilgrims between holy sites. They also support emergency travel, the transport of medical equipment, and provide logistical support for the movement of goods.
Engineer Saleh Al Jasser underscored that this initiative reflects the ministry’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge transportation technologies and environmentally sustainable transport models powered by artificial intelligence. These advancements are crucial for the sustainability of the modern transportation sector and are aligned with the goals of the National Transportation and Logistics Strategy, in accordance with Saudi Vision 2030.
President Abdulaziz Al-Duailej emphasized the significance of this initiative in enabling advanced air mobility. The use of air taxis reduces travel times for passengers in congested areas, especially during emergencies. It also facilitates the swift transportation of goods and medical supplies and enhances surveillance and inspection tasks through the use of drones.
