Russia Dismisses Trump’s Assertion of Ending Ukraine War In a Day

Ukraine War

Russia’s UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, has responded sharply to former US President Donald Trump’s assertion that he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict within a day if re-elected, calling it unrealistic.

Nebenzia rebuffed Trump’s claim during a press briefing on Monday, highlighting that the Ukrainian crisis cannot be resolved instantaneously.

Nebenzia pointed out a missed opportunity in April 2022, when he claimed Russia and Ukraine were close to reaching an agreement in Istanbul.

However, Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine two months prior, in February 2022, citing ongoing conflicts in Ukraine’s eastern regions and the annexation of Crimea since 2014.

Regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s peace efforts, Nebenzia criticized them as insufficient, referring to them as a “joke” rather than a viable peace plan.

He highlighted international calls, including from nearly 80 countries meeting in Switzerland, emphasizing Ukraine’s territorial integrity as crucial for any peace agreement.

Nebenzia reiterated Russian President Vladimir Putin’s conditions for a ceasefire and negotiations, which include Ukraine withdrawing troops from the regions annexed in 2022 and abandoning plans to join NATO.

Zelenskyy has rejected these terms, asserting Ukraine’s right to its territory and dismissing Putin’s demands as ultimatums.

Trump’s statements on resolving the conflict swiftly have been a recurring theme in his public addresses and campaign rhetoric.

He has asserted that meeting with Zelenskyy and Putin would swiftly end the conflict, a claim he repeated during recent debates and public appearances.

Nebenzia underscored the complexities on the ground, with ongoing military confrontations and diplomatic challenges complicating efforts to achieve peace.

He warned that as the situation deteriorates for Ukraine, achieving a diplomatic resolution becomes increasingly challenging.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has faced significant military and humanitarian challenges, receiving delayed but crucial military assistance from the United States.

Despite Ukrainian forces thwarting Russian advances towards the capital, significant fighting continues in southern and eastern regions seized by Moscow.

In conclusion, Nebenzia’s remarks underscored the entrenched positions and complex dynamics fueling the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing the need for realistic diplomacy and international engagement to achieve lasting peace.
