Russia and India Advance Towards Collaborative Military Equipment Production, Says Russian Foreign Minister

Military Equipment Production

Russia and India have achieved substantial progress in discussions regarding joint military equipment production, as stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after meetings with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Moscow. Lavrov emphasized the strategic nature of this cooperation, highlighting its significance for both nations and its contribution to ensuring security across the Eurasian continent.

Acknowledging India’s desire to diversify its sources of military hardware, Lavrov affirmed Moscow’s support for New Delhi’s intention to manufacture necessary items within India. The collaboration underscores the deepening defense ties between the two countries.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin was scheduled to meet with Jaishankar later in the day. Jaishankar expressed expectations for meetings between Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming year.

In addition to military cooperation, discussions between Lavrov and Jaishankar covered various global issues, including conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Bilateral trade and investment were also on the agenda. India has become a key economic partner for Russia, particularly as Moscow faced sweeping sanctions from the West in 2022 due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Lavrov and Jaishankar’s talks reflected the multifaceted nature of the relationship, extending beyond defense collaboration to economic partnerships. Russia has redirected a significant portion of its oil exports to India, and both countries are active members of the BRICS group. Jaishankar highlighted the expected trade volume between India and Russia to exceed $50 billion this year.

Furthermore, India expressed interest in signing a bilateral investment treaty with Russia and pursuing a free trade agreement with the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union, demonstrating the commitment to deepening economic ties alongside their strategic defense partnership.
