Washington, DC – Republicans in the US House of Representatives removed Democrat Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee. The vote, which divided the House along party lines, was 218-211. Republicans cited Ilhan Omar’s 2019 remarks, widely condemned as antisemitic, as the reason for her removal. Ilhan Omar, a refugee from Somalia, is the only African-born member of Congress and one of the few Muslim women in the House.

After the vote, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced plans to appoint Ilhan Omar to a seat on the Budget Committee.
