As he walked out of Downing Street on his last day as British prime minister on Tuesday, Boris Johnson pledged his unwavering support for his successor, Liz Truss.
Johnson, whose time in office was marked by Brexit and Covid and cut short by scandal, said goodbye to cheers and clapping from his fans before meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.
To illustrate his point, he used the metaphor of a booster rocket that has completed its mission and is “gently re-entering the atmosphere and splashing down in some remote and obscure region of the Pacific” to describe his current state of mind.
The new government and Liz Truss have his unwavering support, he said.
He also called for unity among the Conservative government to solve the energy crisis that will likely dominate Truss’s near future.
If his dog Dilyn and the Downing Street cat Larry can overcome their occasional troubles, so can the Conservative party, he said.
