Tallest Building
The Oklahoma City Planning Commission has approved a proposal by Matteson Capital to construct what would become the tallest skyscraper in the United States, surpassing the iconic One World Trade Center in New York.
The New York Post has named the ambitious project the “Legends Tower,” which is set to reach a staggering height of 1,907 feet, overshadowing the 1,776-foot tall One World Trade Center.
The Legends Tower is envisioned as a multi-tower complex consisting of four distinct structures. While three of these towers will each stand at approximately 345 feet, the fourth and main tower will soar to 1,907 feet, making it the centerpiece of the development.
This groundbreaking project will span an impressive five million square feet and is designed to accommodate a diverse mix of uses.
Specifically, the complex is planned to house 1,750 residential apartments, which will cater to a range of tenants, from singles and couples to families.
In addition to residential space, the Legends Tower will incorporate two Hyatt hotels and a condominium, enhancing its appeal as a mixed-use development.
For commercial ventures and community activities, the project includes 110,000 square feet designated for such uses.
The design of Legends Tower also prioritizes leisure and entertainment. Notably, the development will feature a lagoon complemented by a nearby boardwalk, offering scenic views and outdoor activities for residents and visitors alike.
Further amenities include restaurants, a bar, and an observation deck located on the upper floors, providing panoramic views of the cityscape and beyond.
The total investment for this monumental construction is estimated at $1.6 billion. The project timeline suggests a completion window of 24 to 30 months from the commencement of construction, which is scheduled to start this summer with the erection of two of the towers.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the project, concerns have been raised about the feasibility of building such a tall structure in a region known for its challenging weather conditions, including frequent wind storms and tornadoes.
Camal Pennington, Chairman of the Oklahoma Planning Commission, highlighted these concerns during discussions about the project, reflecting the questions posed by the community: “How are you intending to build a tower this tall in the wind and storms and tornadoes we have in Oklahoma City?”
These concerns underscore the engineering and architectural challenges that must be addressed to ensure the safety and stability of the towering structure.
The development of Legends Tower is poised to redefine the skyline of Oklahoma City and could become a landmark project that not only captures the imagination but also spurs economic growth and urban development in the region.
