“I feel afraid”: Muslims in the UK reflect on their sense of belonging following the riots

The dust has settled in Liverpool after racist mobs launched their attacks. Some Muslims believe dialogue is essential, while others emphasize the need for healing.

Liverpool, United Kingdom – On Friday, a holy day for Muslims, attendance at local mosques across the UK has dwindled, with fewer women participating in prayers. Those who do venture out are sharing safety tips: travel in groups, avoid crowded areas, and keep car windows closed.

In Liverpool, the sun shines brightly and school summer holidays are underway, yet the atmosphere is unsettling. This city was one of several in England that experienced far-right riots this week, resulting in an eerie silence as children are noticeably absent from the streets and the gates of a historic church remain locked.

“I’m a strong person, but I still feel fear, you know? I feel scared,” said Saba Ahmed, a local resident who works at a multicultural hub serving the community. “It just doesn’t feel right.”

Concerns have spread throughout the city following Islamophobic and racist riots that erupted after the tragic deaths of three young girls in Southport, located less than an hour’s drive away.

False rumors circulated on social media, claiming that the suspect was a Muslim and an asylum seeker. These unfounded allegations stoked the flames of violence, resulting in the most severe unrest the nation has seen in years.

Fortunately, the riots have been quelled by thousands of anti-racism protesters who outnumbered the rioters, demonstrating solidarity with those affected. In response, police have imposed severe penalties on those involved in the riots, deterring others from joining in.
