According to BBC Urdu, a “militant” detained in India who had been identified as a Lashkar-e-Taiba activist had joined the party in power. According to police sources, Talib Hussain was apprehended by locals on Sunday and turned over to the police. Altaf Thakur, a spokesperson for the BJP’s IIOJK chapter, denied Talib was a party member. He did acknowledge having an “online membership” with the ruling party, though. According to BJP IIOJK minority group official Sheikh Bashir, Talib was appointed as the party’s social media in-charge two months ago but the ruling party, though. Along with Talib Hussain, Fazal Dar was also detained by authorities in the IIOJK’s Pulwama district, and they asserted that he was a militant.
Talib and Fazal were said to have owned six bombs, three magazines, two handguns, a launcher, three hand grenades, a pistol, 47 AK-47 rounds, and remote antennae, according to police, who also claimed to have found their weapons and ammo.
Two months ago, Talib was chosen to lead the IT and social media department. He was a carpenter before the assignment and resides in the IIOJK’s Rajouri district.
According to Talib’s family, he is the oldest of three brothers. A day before his arrest, he had recently become a father after getting married in 2008. They said that Talib joined the BJP in 2017 and has since worked in a variety of positions within the government.
The Hindu reports that Talib Hussain’s connections to the BJP prompted the main opposition party in India, the Congress, to seek an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah at a public protest on Monday in IIOJK. Altaf Thakur, a BJP spokesperson, responded to the accusations by saying that individuals like Talib join the group by taking advantage of online membership and cooperating with the “militants” at the same time. He claimed that Talib Hussain was “placed to target BJP officials” and that they are unable to check the background of everyone who joins the party online.
