The U.S. Geological Survey said on Wednesday that a severe 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the island of Luzon in the Philippines, causing widespread damage and shaking even in the city of Manila.
The quake, which was only 10 kilometers deep, caused no early reports of damage or injuries (6 miles).
The epicentre, according to the United States Geological Survey, was located around 11 kilometres (six miles) east-southeast of Dolores, a town in the province of Abra.
Congressman Eric Singson of the province of Ilocos Sur in the northern Philippines reported to DZMM radio station that the quake had been felt intensely in his region.
“At least 30 seconds passed during the quake.” I was afraid my home would collapse, “Singson remarked.
“In an effort to reach out to the public now, we…. We are currently outside due to aftershocks “Moreover, he said.
The transport ministry said that all metro rail systems in Manila had been stopped during rush hour after the quake. Mass media also reported that the capital’s senate building had to be evacuated.
There may have been damage in Abra, where Dolores is located, but in Manila there were no reports of damage, according to Renato Solidum, director of the state seismology agency, who spoke with DZMM radio station.
“It did not do any damage in the DC area. I don’t think it has any bearing on building integrity, but it’s still a good idea to check on things like the MRT every now and again.”
