External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made pointed comments towards Pakistan during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, emphasizing that cross-border activities driven by extremism and separatism hinder bilateral trade and relations.
In his address, Jaishankar stated, “Development and growth require peace and stability. The SCO Charter calls for a firm stance against the ‘three evils’—terrorism, extremism, and separatism.” He stressed that such negative actions impede trade, energy flows, and connectivity among nations.
He underscored the importance of the SCO’s mission to address these issues, asserting, “In today’s world of globalization and shifting dynamics, we must prioritize the SCO’s core objectives.” Jaishankar called for honest dialogue, trust, and good neighborliness, reiterating the need to adhere to the SCO Charter.
In his national statement, he emphasized that cooperation among member states should be based on mutual respect, sovereignty, and genuine partnerships rather than unilateral agendas. He pointed out that the SCO cannot progress by selectively adopting global practices, especially in trade and transit.
Jaishankar also highlighted India’s global sustainability initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles through Mission Life. He acknowledged the challenging global landscape, referencing significant conflicts and the developing world’s ongoing recovery from COVID-19, and emphasized the importance of building mutual trust and regional cooperation.
Lastly, he congratulated Pakistan on its presidency of the SCO summit and affirmed India’s full support for its successful tenure.
