GAZA: At least 22 Palestinians were killed on Thursday in a series of Israeli airstrikes across Gaza, including two civilians who died in a strike on the Holy Family Church, once regularly contacted by the late Pope Francis, according to local medics and church officials.
Civilian Deaths Mount Amid Ongoing Conflict
Among the victims were eight aid truck security personnel and a family of seven—a man, his wife, and their five children—killed in northern Jabalia, medics said. Three others were reported dead in central Gaza, and four more in Zeitoun, located in eastern Gaza.
These strikes came as ceasefire talks continued in Doha, though Hamas officials told Reuters that no breakthrough had been achieved, despite U.S. claims of progress.
Strike Hits Holy Family Church, Wounds Former Papal Confidant
The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem confirmed an Israeli strike hit Gaza’s Holy Family Church, killing a man and a woman and injuring several others, including Father Gabriele Romanelli, a priest known for keeping Pope Francis updated on the conflict.
Photos released by the church showed damage near the main cross, broken windows, and scorched stone on the façade.
“We pray for peace and mourn this barbaric act,” said the Patriarchate.
“Nothing justifies the killing of innocent civilians.”
Father Romanelli was seen receiving treatment at Al-Ahly Hospital, with injuries to his leg.
Global Condemnation, Calls for Ceasefire Grow
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni denounced the strikes, calling Israel’s actions “unacceptable”, especially against civilian and religious targets.
The Vatican said Pope Leo was “deeply saddened” and renewed the call for an immediate ceasefire.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged awareness of civilian casualties and said the incident is under review.
“The IDF strives to avoid harm to civilians and regrets any damage to religious sites,” it said in a statement.
Background: Months of Escalating Conflict
Israel launched a full-scale military campaign to eradicate Hamas in October 2023 following a deadly attack by the group. The offensive has since crippled Gaza, leaving millions displaced and pushing the territory into a state of severe humanitarian crisis.
