Israeli forces have confirmed the death of Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas in Gaza. The Israeli military released drone footage showing Sinwar in his final moments, sitting alone on a sofa in a rubble-strewn apartment, covered in dust.
In the video, he is seen throwing a stick at an approaching drone, while his right arm appears to be severely injured. The operation began when Israeli infantry spotted suspected militants and opened fire, leading to a gunfight. Sinwar fled to a damaged building, where drone surveillance tracked him.
After identifying him as a fighter, the Israeli military targeted the building, causing it to collapse and resulting in Sinwar’s death.
Israeli officials described him as a significant figure behind the deadly October 7 attacks on Israel, which claimed around 1,200 lives and involved numerous hostages. His identity was confirmed through dental records and DNA testing.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that this operation was part of Israel’s commitment to hold accountable those responsible for the attacks and to work towards the release of hostages still held by Hamas.
Hamas has not yet commented on Sinwar’s death.
