India demolished the allegedly “illegal” mosque in Hyderabad

In the presence of the local police, the city of Hyderabad, India, demolished the Masjid-e-Khaja Mahmood in Hyderabad.

The mosque in Shamshabad was purportedly bulldozed around 3 am on Monday night. According to authorities, a mosque was “illegal,” but they didn’t go into greater detail.

The Muslim community in the area was outraged, arguing that the mosque was legitimate. Protests erupted in Shamshabad, resulting in the deployment of a huge number of police officers.

The Muslims of Green Avenue Colony built the mosque in 2016 and have been using it ever since for their daily prayers.

Several mosques and Muslim graveyards have been destroyed since the Telangana Rashtra Samithi administration came to power in 2014.

This last demolition drew at least 1,000 protesters.

Saber Ali, the Shamshabad Municipality Commissioner, and the local police department both declined to comment on the controversy or the mosque’s legal status.
