The Kingdom urges an end to “disgraceful acts” that violate all religious teachings and have the potential to fuel hatred between religions.
ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia summoned a Danish diplomat to protest the desecration of the Quran by an extreme-right group in Copenhagen, reported early today.
During a meeting with the Danish charge d’affaires, foreign ministry officials from Saudi Arabia delivered a protest note expressing their concerns over recent incidents of Quran desecration.
The officials urged an end to these acts, emphasizing that they violate religious teachings, international laws, and norms. They also highlighted the potential to incite hatred between religions.
The Saudi government’s response came after a far-right group in Denmark, Danske Patrioter, posted a video showing the desecration and burning of what appeared to be the Muslim holy book.
This incident is the latest in a series that has sparked outrage in the Muslim world.
In addition to the incident in Denmark, Saudi Arabia also denounced protests by a Sweden-based Iraqi refugee, Salwan Momika, who burned pages of the Quran outside Stockholm’s main mosque. Although in a separate protest, the refugee stepped on the Quran but did not burn it, it still prompted Riyadh to express its objections by handing a protest note to the Swedish charge d’affaires.
The situation has prompted both Saudi Arabia and Iraq to call for an extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the issue of Quran desecration in Sweden and Denmark. The meeting is expected to take place in Jeddah on Monday.
In response to the concerns raised, the OIC’s secretary-general, Hissein Brahim Taha, received a phone call from Sweden’s foreign minister, Tobias Billstrom.
Billstrom assured that Stockholm rejects acts insulting the Quran and expressed the desire to maintain positive relations with OIC members.
