Last month, Cristiano Ronaldo helped lead Al Nassr to a historic Asia Cup win in Iran. This marked the first time a Saudi club had played in Iran since 2016, following a “ground-breaking agreement” between the two countries’ football federations announced by the AFC (Asian Football Confederation).

Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner with five UEFA Champions League titles to his name, captained the Saudi Arabian side to an opening three points in Group E during this competition.

Cricket World Mourns The Loss Of Spin Maestro Bishan Singh Bedi At 77

Meanwhile, renowned Indian cricketer and spin maestro Bishan Singh Bedi has passed away at the age of 77, as confirmed by the Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur, on Monday. Thakur described it as a significant loss to the world of sports.

Thakur, a former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, expressed, “Former captain of the Indian Cricket team, a bowler who was always remembered by the nation, Bishan Singh Bedi, is no more.” He added, “It’s deeply sad news and a huge loss for cricket. The entire cricketing world stands with his family during this moment of grief.”

Bishan Singh Bedi

Bedi was a left-arm spinner and a key part of the famed spin quartet, which also included Erapalli Prasanna, Srinivas Venkataraghavan, and Bhagwath Chandrasekhar. He had an illustrious international career between 1967 and 1979, claiming 266 wickets in 67 Tests. He also represented India in 10 one-day internationals from 1974 to 1979.

Known for his candid and often blunt criticism of fellow cricketers and the administration of the sport, Bedi was a prominent figure at cricket events in New Delhi. However, his declining health in recent years limited his participation in social activities.

Bishan Singh Bedi has two sons and two daughters from his two marriages. His younger son, Angad, is married to Neha Dhupia, an actress and former Miss India (2002).

Former Pakistan captain Intikhab Alam expressed his sadness at Bedi’s passing and praised him, saying, “I had a very cordial and friendly relationship with him. He was a great spinner and a great human being. It’s a significant loss for cricket in general and Indo-Pak cricket in particular.”
