The spokesperson for Afghanistan’s government, Zabihullah Mujahid, has revealed that two United States nationals have been apprehended for purported violations of Afghan law. Mujahid chose not to divulge the identities of the detained individuals but acknowledged that additional foreigners had also been taken into custody.
“I think there are two Americans, and the reasons for their visit are not clear yet; but whatever the reasons, anyone coming to Afghanistan is obliged to observe Afghan law. Anyone who gets an Afghan visa means they agree to follow our laws,” he stated.
American officials have also confirmed the detention of two of their nationals, one identified as Ryan Corbett. The US authorities asserted that the Americans were being held “without reason.”
International relations analyst Rashid Qutbzada speculated that the Taliban might seek the release of individuals they desire in exchange for the detained Americans.
In a February briefing, the State Department emphasized its ongoing efforts to secure the release of detained Americans in Afghanistan, acknowledging the situation as a significant hurdle to constructive engagement with the Taliban.
Analysts suggested various possibilities regarding the detainees’ fate, including potential trials in Afghanistan or exchanges for individuals desired by the Taliban.
Hadi Qurishi, a military affairs expert, emphasized that American citizens detained in Afghanistan would be handled according to their alleged crimes.
Previously, the spokesperson for the US State Department underscored that the detention of American citizens in Afghanistan poses a significant obstacle to positive engagement with the Taliban.
