Authorities said that a strong storm destroyed the southern industrial hubs of South Korea on Tuesday, leaving at least two people dead, ten others missing, and thousands of people without homes.
Typhoon Hinnamnor battered the industrial cities of Pohang, Gyeongju, and Ulsan in the southeast of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday morning before departing the peninsula early. The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that it will pass through Sapporo in northern Japan at around 9 p.m. local time as it moved northeast across the Sea of Japan.
The island of Hokkaido, where Sapporo is situated, will experience strong gusts and waves tonight and on Wednesday, according to Japanese authorities. When the typhoon passed earlier on Tuesday, train services and flights were canceled on the southernmost island of Kyushu.
Strong currents in Pohang, South Korea, claimed the lives of one citizen and left eight others missing in submerged underground parking lots, according to the Ministry of Interior and Safety. A crushed car was being removed from an underground apartment garage where muddy water had blocked its entrance, according to local TV YTN.
One person was reported missing in Ulsan as of Tuesday afternoon, and another person died after being buried in a house damaged by a landslide in Gyeongju.
