800,000 Litres of WFP Fuel Destroyed by Israeli Strikes in Yemen

Israeli Strikes

A recent report from the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has highlighted a devastating impact of Israeli air strikes on Yemen’s Hudaida Port, which occurred on July 20.

According to the report, approximately 800,000 liters of fuel owned by WFP, intended for humanitarian purposes, were destroyed in these air strikes.

The report details that the fuel, which was crucial for the organization’s on-demand services, was lost when Israeli airstrikes targeted Al Hodeidah Port, an area under the control of the Houthi group.

This attack resulted in significant casualties and extensive material damage, with estimates placing the financial loss at around $20 million.

The scale of destruction underscores the severe impact on humanitarian operations in Yemen, where fuel is essential for delivering aid and supporting various relief efforts.

The air strikes were reportedly a response to a Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv that took place a day earlier. This drone strike resulted in the death of one Israeli citizen and injured nine others.

The Houthi attack was perceived as retaliation for Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza, further escalating tensions in the region.

In the aftermath of the air strikes, Yemeni officials initially reported six deaths and numerous injuries.

However, as the situation unfolded, it was confirmed that the bodies of nine workers were recovered from the port and adjacent fuel depots.

This tragic loss of life adds to the already dire humanitarian situation in Yemen, where conflict and instability have caused widespread suffering and hardship.

The destruction of WFP’s fuel reserves not only exacerbates the immediate humanitarian crisis but also hampers ongoing relief efforts.

The loss of such a large quantity of fuel complicates the logistics of delivering aid to vulnerable populations and highlights the broader impact of the ongoing conflict on humanitarian operations.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community and humanitarian organizations will need to navigate these challenges to provide effective support and assistance to those in need.
