Shaheen Chowk Underpass Aims to Ease Traffic Near Major Universities
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced that construction on the much-anticipated Shaheen Chowk underpass in Islamabad will begin soon, with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) finalizing the project’s design phase.
The new underpass, located near several prominent universities, is aimed at relieving chronic traffic congestion in the area—a daily struggle for students, faculty, and residents alike. The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance urban mobility and modernize the capital’s road infrastructure.
“The presence of multiple educational institutions in the vicinity makes this project especially important,” Naqvi said. “We are committed to easing traffic flow and improving commute times for the thousands who travel through this route every day.”
CDA officials confirmed that the Shaheen Chowk underpass is a key component of a larger road network upgrade for Islamabad. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce travel times and improve connectivity between sectors and major roadways in the city.
This project follows the successful completion of the Jinnah Square underpass on Murree Road, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Completed in just 35 days, that underpass now provides direct access from Murree Road to Srinagar Highway, serving as a model for rapid infrastructure development.
The Shaheen Chowk underpass is expected to bring similar improvements to traffic conditions in the capital and marks another step forward in Islamabad’s ongoing urban development.
