Indonesia’s government has accused former national police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo of potentially committing treason over allegations that he orchestrated illegal surveillance of President Prabowo Subianto’s telephone communications.
Presidential spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi said on Wednesday that the alleged wiretapping threatened national security and could have exposed sensitive state information.
Speaking to reporters in Jakarta, Hadi said investigators were still examining the motive behind the alleged surveillance. He added that the president had expressed serious concern over the incident.
Police arrested Listyo and two other senior officers on Tuesday following an investigation into alleged illegal phone monitoring.
According to investigators, the surveillance began in 2025, when Listyo was serving as national police chief. The alleged targets included the president, government officials, politicians, journalists, businesspeople and representatives of non-governmental organisations.
Top detective Asep Safrudin said the surveillance allegedly took place without legal authorisation or any legitimate investigative process.
The case has emerged as President Prabowo faces growing domestic pressure over economic difficulties and the government’s response to destructive wildfires.
Listyo, 57, previously served as national police chief before Prabowo appointed him as presidential chief of staff last month.
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the charges or the investigation.
