Indian filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh revealed he recognised Deepika Padukone’s star potential before her Bollywood debut. Moreover, he said Shah Rukh Khan shared the same belief. The filmmaker reflected on her journey during a recent podcast interview.
Lankesh recalled spotting Deepika while she worked as a fashion model in Bangalore. Soon afterward, he contacted her after she relocated to Mumbai. He wanted her to play the lead role in his film Aishwarya.
Lankesh Recalls Discovering Deepika Before Her Breakthrough
Lankesh said Shah Rukh visited Bangalore during an event promoting Aishwarya. During the event, journalists asked him about casting Deepika in Om Shanti Om. Shah Rukh jokingly replied that the film’s success meant he would pay her more.
Within a year, Deepika debuted opposite Shah Rukh in Om Shanti Om. The film became a blockbuster and launched her successful Bollywood career. Since then, she has remained among India’s leading actors.
Filmmaker Credits Deepika’s Charisma and Screen Presence
Lankesh said Deepika always displayed qualities that distinguished her from other newcomers. He praised her charisma, confidence, athletic build, and commanding screen presence. Consequently, he believed she was destined for stardom.
However, Lankesh credited Pooja Dadlani for helping shape Deepika’s career behind the scenes. He acknowledged her contribution to the actor’s professional growth.
The filmmaker also remembered Deepika’s nervousness during her first day of filming. Initially, acting beside experienced child actor Kishan intimidated her. However, Lankesh helped her feel comfortable on set.
He said Deepika quickly understood the demands of acting. After finding her rhythm, she never looked back. Lankesh concluded that some performers become actors, while others naturally become stars.
