Indian authorities have tightened security in New Delhi ahead of a major opposition march and rally scheduled for Sunday. Security personnel carrying batons and shields have gathered around Ramlila Maidan, supported by riot-control vehicles.
The demonstration, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, will demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties expect a large turnout, making the protest a significant political event.
Security Measures and Traffic Restrictions
Police have deployed security personnel around the rally venue and along the planned march route. Authorities have also warned commuters about possible traffic diversions due to the expected crowds.
The opposition plans to organise a march of approximately 1.5 kilometres from central Delhi to Ramlila Maidan. Meanwhile, police have urged residents and participants to cooperate with security officials.
Senior police officer Rohit Rajbir said arrangements were in place at the venue and along the march route. He also confirmed that people had started arriving for the demonstration.
Opposition Challenges Voter List Revision
The protest centres on a controversial voter list revision that critics say benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Opposition parties want Kumar to resign over concerns surrounding the electoral process.
The revision, which began last year, reportedly removed more than 130 million names from voter lists. These included 28 million deceased voters, 63 million people who had relocated and 30 million individuals who could not be traced.
Opposition parties allege that the deletions disproportionately affect Muslim voters and other minorities. However, the Election Commission has denied political bias and said wrongly removed voters can re-enrol.
The BJP has also accused opposition groups of undermining democratic institutions by questioning legitimate electoral procedures.
