The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective July 7, 2025. Gupta becomes the seventh CEO in the history of the sport’s global governing body.
His selection follows an extensive international recruitment campaign launched in March, which attracted over 2,500 applicants from 25 countries, including professionals from major global sports organisations and top-tier corporate institutions.
After reviewing 12 shortlisted candidates, the ICC Nominations Committee — comprising Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, ECB Chair Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva, and BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia — unanimously recommended Gupta. The recommendation was formally approved by ICC Chairman Jay Shah and ratified by the ICC Board.
In its official announcement, the ICC praised Gupta as “a visionary leader with a strong track record in building consumer-centric sports franchises and a key architect of India’s modern sports ecosystem.”
Currently serving as CEO of Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar, Gupta brings over 20 years of experience in media, sports strategy, and commercial growth. He took over the JioStar Sports division in November 2024 after the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star, and has since been credited with transforming India’s sports broadcasting landscape.
Welcoming Gupta, ICC Chairman Jay Shah said, “Sanjog’s depth in sports strategy and commercialisation will be a vital asset for the ICC. His understanding of global sports and entertainment, along with his passion for technology and commitment to enhancing the fan experience, will help us expand cricket’s global presence and deepen its impact in core markets.”
Shah also reiterated the ICC’s commitment to broadening cricket’s reach, including the goal of making the sport a regular feature at the Olympics.
In response to his appointment, Gupta said, “It’s an honour to take on this role at such a dynamic moment in cricket’s history, supported by nearly 2 billion passionate fans worldwide. I look forward to helping grow the game globally, deepen fan engagement, and work closely with Member Boards to shape cricket’s next chapter.”
Gupta began his career as a journalist before joining Star India in 2010, where he rose through senior leadership positions. As Head of Sports at Disney & Star India from 2020, he spearheaded initiatives like multi-language coverage, digital-first broadcasting, and a strong emphasis on women’s sports. He also played a significant role in elevating the popularity of key properties such as the IPL, ICC tournaments, Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), Indian Super League (ISL), Premier League, and Wimbledon.
Gupta now takes the helm of the ICC at a time of unprecedented opportunity for the sport, with cricket poised to expand its global footprint and evolve into a more inclusive and innovative game.
