Bollywood actor Imran Khan has approached the Bombay High Court to challenge a notice directing him to leave India by October 28. He has described the order as arbitrary, disproportionate and unconstitutional, asking the court to suspend its implementation while considering his petition.
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issued the notice on October 14 following Khan’s participation in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration took place near August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on October 10.
Actor Questions Legality of Exit Notice
In his petition, Khan argued that authorities issued the notice without providing a proper hearing or clearly explaining the alleged legal violations. He has asked the court to cancel the order and grant interim relief against coercive measures, including deportation.
Khan, an American citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, also argued that the authorities had failed to establish how his participation in the demonstration violated applicable laws. His legal team maintains that the notice disregarded procedural safeguards and fundamental rights.
The petition seeks protection from further action while the court examines the matter. The case is expected to be presented for an urgent hearing before a division bench.
Authorities Issue Additional Notice Over OCI Status
Meanwhile, the FRRO issued a separate show-cause notice asking Khan to explain why authorities should not cancel his OCI status. The development adds another legal challenge to the actor’s ongoing dispute with immigration officials.
The authorities’ action followed Khan’s brief detention during the October 10 protest. Demonstrators had gathered to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the revision of electoral rolls.
Khan’s legal challenge now places the immigration notice before the high court for review. The court’s consideration will determine the next steps in the proceedings, while the separate show-cause notice requires a response from the actor.
