The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has scheduled a hearing for June 5 in the high-profile £190 million case involving former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The hearing will focus on the appeals they filed seeking suspension of their sentences.
According to the court’s cause list, a two-member bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif will preside over the proceedings. The hearing is set for Thursday next week.
The appeals were submitted by the couple following their convictions in the case, and they have since requested the court to suspend their sentences while the case undergoes further legal scrutiny. Both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are seeking relief from the court, maintaining that their convictions are unjust and should be set aside.
The couple’s legal team had earlier appealed to the court for an urgent hearing, citing the need for timely justice. Their lawyers have argued that the case was politically motivated and lacks legal merit, urging the court to expedite the matter.
This hearing comes amid growing public and political attention surrounding the legal challenges faced by the former premier and his spouse. The case has attracted significant media coverage, with many viewing it as a test of judicial independence and transparency in Pakistan’s legal system.
Imran Khan, who founded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been facing multiple legal battles following his ouster from power. The £190 million case is one of the most prominent cases against him, involving allegations of financial misconduct and misuse of authority during his tenure in office.
Bushra Bibi, his wife, has also been implicated in the matter, which has further fueled debate around the legal and political implications of the case.
As the June 5 hearing approaches, all eyes are on the IHC bench to see how the judiciary proceeds in this politically sensitive case and whether any interim relief will be granted to the former first couple.
