The International Energy Agency (IEA) has agreed to accelerate the release of approximately 100 million barrels of remaining emergency oil stocks as global energy markets continue to face supply pressures.
According to TRT World, the agency’s Governing Board announced the decision on Thursday following an assessment of global oil markets and energy security. The move aims to ease persistent supply shortages, particularly in the diesel market.
The remaining stocks form part of a collective emergency release launched in March in response to the crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. IEA members have already released approximately 330 million barrels under the initiative.
Once the remaining supplies enter the market, total releases will exceed the original commitment of 400 million barrels. The agency said some participating countries had released more oil than initially pledged, while others planned additional contributions.
The Governing Board urged member countries to complete their outstanding releases as quickly as possible, taking their national circumstances into account. Several members have already established plans to accelerate deliveries.
Furthermore, the agency encouraged countries with oil production and refining capacity to increase supplies of crude oil and refined petroleum products. It placed particular emphasis on diesel, which continues to face significant market tightness.
The board also stressed the importance of maintaining the uninterrupted flow of international energy trade to strengthen global energy security.
Meanwhile, the IEA Secretariat will monitor progress and report to Group of Seven leaders and the Governing Board on whether further measures are necessary. Officials will also use an updated assessment of oil markets, focusing specifically on diesel supplies.
The decision highlights growing international concerns over energy supply disruptions and the need for coordinated action to stabilise markets and protect consumers from prolonged shortages.
