The mystery surrounding the deaths of three women in a Karachi flat has been solved after the husband and son confessed to the killings, police said on Wednesday. The suspects cited financial hardships as a motive behind the gruesome crime.
The victims, identified as 52-year-old Samina, her 19-year-old daughter Samreen, and 22-year-old daughter-in-law Maha, were found dead last week in an apartment in Gulshan-e-Iqbal’s Block 1. Samina’s 30-year-old son, Muhammad Yasin, was hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities described the head of the family, Muhammad Iqbal, as mentally unstable.
Initially, the deaths were suspected to have been caused by a gas leak, but post-mortem reports revealed inconsistencies, including the fact that one of the bodies was two days old when police were notified.
Investigation uncovered that Iqbal had laced a drink with sedatives, which was consumed by his wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law. Yasin also fell severely ill after drinking the mixture, which reportedly prevented Iqbal from consuming it himself.
Police further revealed that Iqbal may be involved in witchcraft. The family had significant financial liabilities, including a loan exceeding Rs15 million, and had rented a house and car. Yasin’s involvement in the property business is under investigation. Letters written by Iqbal and Maha before the incident are also being examined.
Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar has taken notice, directing SSP East District to conduct a transparent investigation. Police have emphasized that the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the final post-mortem report. Authorities continue to probe the case to uncover all underlying motives and connections.
