Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a broad, multi-year patent licensing agreement covering 5G, artificial intelligence, computing, and networking technologies. The deal marks the first licensing agreement between the two companies specifically covering 5G technology.
Under the agreement, both companies will cross-license patents from their respective portfolios. In addition, Qualcomm will purchase certain Huawei patents registered in the United States covering computing, AI, networking, and other technologies.
Agreement Covers 5G and AI Technologies
The companies said the agreement reflects their commitment to intellectual property rights and fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory licensing practices. However, they did not disclose the financial terms of the deal, which still requires regulatory approvals before completion.
Huawei said its extensive research and development work has contributed to major advances in mobile communications and 4G and 5G standards. Meanwhile, Qualcomm highlighted its foundational role in wireless technologies and said the agreement recognizes innovations from both companies.
Huawei Expands Intellectual Property Business
The agreement also strengthens Huawei’s position as a major holder of technology patents despite years of US restrictions on its access to advanced semiconductors. The company has increasingly expanded its intellectual property licensing activities with international technology firms.
Huawei said the expected value of its patent licensing contracts has now exceeded $6.9 billion. Furthermore, the company has signed more than 270 licensing agreements globally, reflecting the growing importance of its intellectual property business.
The deal follows Huawei’s recent licensing agreement with HP covering Wi-Fi patents. Consequently, the latest agreement represents another major development in Huawei’s efforts to monetize its technology portfolio while maintaining its role in global communications standards.
