A senior Houthi official has warned the United States of a “swift and painful response” if Washington joins Saudi Arabia’s military campaign against the group in Yemen.
Mohammed Al Bukhaiti, a member of the Houthi political bureau, said any US involvement would prompt retaliation targeting American interests across the region. His warning comes as tensions escalate following a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure, including Riyadh’s international airport.
Houthis Threaten US Interests Across the Region
Speaking to AFP, Al Bukhaiti said the group would not hesitate to respond if the United States became involved in military operations against Yemen. He also warned employees and workers at Saudi oil facilities and airports to stay away from those sites, describing them as potential targets.
The statements followed reports that Saudi Arabia had sought Washington’s assistance in countering Houthi attacks. US President Donald Trump said his administration was considering joining Saudi strikes against the group.
Trump criticised the Houthis on Monday, describing their recent actions as unacceptable. However, Washington had not announced a decision to participate in the military campaign.
Deadly Riyadh Airport Attack Raises Tensions
The warning followed a deadly strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday. The attack reportedly killed 13 people and injured hundreds, prompting Saudi authorities to suspend airport operations.
The incident has intensified security concerns across the kingdom. Saudi Arabia reported further missile threats on Monday, while its military coalition said it intercepted two ballistic missiles heading towards Khamis Mushait in the south.
The Houthis also claimed attacks targeting Saudi facilities, including the airport and a military base.
Saudi Arabia Faces Growing Security Challenges
Saudi authorities have increased security measures as attacks threaten transport hubs and energy infrastructure. The disruptions have also affected regional aviation, with several airlines cancelling or suspending flights to Saudi cities.
Meanwhile, the United States has advised its personnel in Saudi Arabia to seek authorisation before using airports and urged American citizens to exercise extreme caution when travelling by air. The escalating attacks have added pressure on Saudi Arabia as it intensifies its military campaign against the Houthis.
International Calls for De-escalation
The latest developments have raised fears of a wider regional confrontation if Washington becomes directly involved. UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemned the repeated attacks on Saudi Arabia and urged both sides to reduce tensions. He warned that continued fighting would deepen the suffering caused by Yemen’s long-running conflict.
For now, the United States has not confirmed whether it will join Saudi military operations. The situation remains volatile as Houthi threats, Saudi defence measures and Washington’s deliberations continue.
