ADEN: Houthi fighters launched 14 ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting populated districts along Yemen’s western coast, the Yemeni Armed Forces Media Centre said on Thursday, as fighting intensifies in several parts of the country.
The centre quoted a military source as saying air defences intercepted several drones over the Taiz front and other districts along the western coastline.
According to the source, the ballistic missiles failed to hit positions occupied by forces deployed along the western coast. The military praised what it described as the high combat readiness and morale of its units across different sectors.
Ground Clashes Continue in Western Taiz
Meanwhile, Yemeni forces suppressed what the military source described as hostile fire and threats in the Al-Kadaha sector of the Al-Barh front in western Taiz province.
The development came amid reciprocal ground clashes in the area as tensions rise following a prolonged period of comparatively limited fighting.
Yemen has experienced a relative lull since April 2022 after years of conflict between government forces and the Houthis, who have controlled the capital Sanaa and other areas since September 2014.
Fighting Resumes Across Several Yemeni Provinces
However, clashes have intensified in recent weeks across Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea and Taiz, raising concerns about another escalation in a country already facing a severe humanitarian and economic crisis.
A Saudi-led coalition has backed Yemen’s internationally recognised government during the conflict, while Iran has faced accusations of supporting the Houthis.
Furthermore, regional tensions increased after the Houthis announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia in July.
The latest missile and drone attacks underline the fragile security situation despite the relative lull that followed the 2022 truce, with renewed fighting threatening to deepen instability across Yemen.
