SANAA: Yemen’s Houthis have rejected Saudi accusations that their military operations pose a threat to Islamic holy sites in Mecca, describing the allegations as “fabrications and lies.”
The group said its attacks inside Saudi Arabia target oil infrastructure and military facilities rather than religious sites. Moreover, the Houthis maintained that their operations do not threaten Mecca or other Islamic sanctities in the kingdom.
“There is no threat from Yemen to the sanctities,” the group said, responding to Saudi claims surrounding the potential consequences of continuing attacks from Yemen.
The statement comes amid renewed military tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, with strikes and counter-strikes increasing concerns about a wider escalation.
Houthis Say Operations Target Oil and Military Facilities
The Houthis insisted that Saudi energy infrastructure and military installations remain the targets of their operations.
Consequently, the group rejected any suggestion that its attacks deliberately endanger religious sites or worshippers in Mecca.
Saudi Arabia, however, has accused the Houthis of creating broader security risks through their missile and drone operations.
The competing claims come as both sides increasingly use public statements to explain their military actions and assign responsibility for the escalation.
Mecca Claims Add Religious Dimension to Escalation
Meanwhile, allegations involving Mecca introduce a particularly sensitive religious dimension to the confrontation because the city contains Islam’s holiest site and receives Muslim pilgrims from around the world.
The Houthis therefore sought to distance their military campaign from any potential threat to religious locations.
Furthermore, the group portrayed Saudi allegations as an attempt to misrepresent the intended targets of its operations.
The latest exchange underscores the widening information battle accompanying renewed hostilities. However, the Houthi statement represents the group’s account of its targeting policy and does not independently establish the effects or risks associated with individual attacks.
