At least 53 soldiers have been killed and more than 200 recruits wounded after Iran-aligned Houthi rebels launched ballistic missile strikes against a Yemeni government military camp in Shabwa province. The attack marks one of the deadliest incidents since fighting intensified in Yemen earlier this year.
According to military officials and provincial authorities, three ballistic missiles struck the Al-Alam camp on Monday, targeting the Ahmed al-Sulaimani Training Centre. Newly recruited internal security personnel were undergoing training when the missiles hit.
The Shabwa provincial government described the attack as a serious military escalation and warned that the death toll could rise. Emergency teams transported injured recruits to nearby hospitals as medical facilities sought additional support to treat the casualties.
The Houthis acknowledged responsibility for the strike, claiming that Saudi officers operated the targeted camp. However, they provided no publicly verified evidence supporting the allegation, and Saudi authorities did not immediately comment.
Yemen’s internationally recognised government condemned the attack, while Presidential Leadership Council head Rashad al-Alimi pledged a firm response. Provincial officials also called on the government and the Saudi-led coalition to strengthen air defence and early-warning systems to prevent further attacks.
The strike comes amid renewed fighting between the Houthis and government forces following the breakdown of a 2022 ceasefire. The escalating conflict has intensified regional tensions, with Houthi forces also targeting Saudi interests in recent weeks.
The latest violence further threatens Yemen’s already fragile security situation and worsens the humanitarian crisis affecting millions of people across the country.
