Saudi Arabia has accused Yemen’s Houthi movement of attacking an electricity distribution station in Madinah, sparking condemnation across the Muslim world. The incident occurred on September 29 at the Taibah electricity distribution station, according to the Saudi-led coalition.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki said investigators linked the attack to the Houthis. Authorities examined the drone wreckage and conducted an operational review.
One Transformer Damaged
The attack put one electricity transformer out of service. However, Saudi authorities said the wider electricity network remained operational. The facility supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites.
Al-Maliki described the incident as part of what he called Houthi attempts to target the Two Holy Mosques. The Houthis, however, denied responsibility for attacks on Islam’s holy sites.
Muslim Countries Condemn Attack
The alleged attack drew strong reactions from several Muslim countries. Türkiye condemned the reported strike and expressed support for Saudi Arabia. Qatar also called the incident a serious violation of the sanctity of Islamic holy sites.
Sudan likewise reaffirmed its support for Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the Arab League described the reported attack as an unacceptable escalation.
Al-Azhar in Egypt also condemned the incident and said attacks on Madinah could provoke Muslims worldwide.
Yemen Conflict Escalates
The incident comes amid renewed fighting between the Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognised government. The Houthis control Sanaa and parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline. Saudi Arabia supports the internationally recognised government.
Cross-border attacks had largely declined after the 2022 UN-brokered ceasefire. However, fighting has intensified again this year. The latest escalation has also increased risks around the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait.
For now, Saudi authorities have pledged further measures to protect Madinah, Makkah and visitors to the holy sites.
