A Pakistani national was killed and 11 other people were injured in a fresh attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday, Saudi authorities confirmed. The incident came just a day after another deadly strike forced airport officials to suspend operations.
According to Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority, a projectile struck the airport and sparked a fire. The attack added to growing security concerns as Yemen’s Houthi group continued targeting Saudi infrastructure.
Fresh Strike Hits Riyadh International Airport
The Saudi-led coalition reported that a projectile hit Riyadh airport on Sunday. Meanwhile, air defence systems intercepted another missile near the facility. Saudi authorities confirmed that one Pakistani resident died in the latest incident, while 11 others suffered injuries. Emergency teams transferred the injured to hospitals for treatment.
Following the attack, authorities extended the airport closure by another 24 hours, until 9pm GMT on Monday, according to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24.
Previous Attack Caused Heavy Casualties
The latest incident followed a major attack on Saturday that killed 13 people and injured more than 300, according to reports from Saudi authorities. The strike prompted officials to suspend airport operations. The Houthis claimed responsibility for multiple attacks over the weekend, including strikes targeting Riyadh airport. The group also threatened further attacks against Saudi transport hubs.
The escalating incidents have disrupted aviation and raised concerns about the safety of passengers, airport workers and other civilians.
Attacks Spread to Other Saudi Facilities
Saudi authorities also reported an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. The Houthis claimed that they had targeted the facility as part of their wider operations against the kingdom. Additionally, the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a drone in the Eastern Province and destroyed a ballistic missile heading towards Khamis Mushait, a southern Saudi city that hosts a major military base.
The developments have increased pressure on Saudi Arabia as the conflict with the Houthis intensifies.
International Concern Grows
The attacks have drawn international condemnation, with several foreign embassies advising their citizens to avoid Riyadh airport. Pakistan has also expressed concern over the safety of its nationals in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, the Houthis have warned of further strikes as Saudi Arabia continues its military campaign in Yemen. The situation remains volatile, with airport operations and regional travel affected by ongoing security concerns.
