KARACHI: More than 115 tolas of gold jewellery were stolen from two houses in separate Karachi neighbourhoods within days, allegedly by two housemaids, police said on Friday. The incidents occurred in Mohammad Ali Society and Bahadurabad and rank among the largest domestic theft cases reported in the city so far in 2026.
In the first incident, burglars stole over 100 tolas of gold jewellery worth more than Rs45 million from a house in Mohammad Ali Society. Police registered a case at the Bahadurabad police station after the affected family approached authorities. According to investigators, the homeowners had hired the two maids only a day earlier on the recommendation of the buildingโs security guard.
Police said the women, identified as Nadia and Dilshad, left the house as usual on Wednesday while the family went to visit relatives. However, when the residents returned later that evening, they found the wardrobe locks broken and jewellery boxes scattered across the floor. Six gold sets, along with rings, bangles, earrings and other ornaments, were missing.
CCTV footage and second complaint strengthen police case
The family immediately requested police action and sought recovery of the stolen items. Subsequently, CCTV footage showing the housemaids fleeing after the theft was obtained and handed over to investigators. Following media coverage of the case, another family in Bahadurabad came forward and identified the same women as suspects in a similar theft.
Police investigations revealed that about 15 tola of gold jewellery was stolen from a house near Char Minar Chowrangi in Bahadurabad on January 5. The stolen items included gold earrings, rings and other ornaments taken from a wardrobe drawer. Officers said the suspects had been working as housemaids in the area for nearly two weeks.
Meanwhile, police believe the women are habitual offenders who may be involved in additional thefts. The combined value of the gold stolen in both cases exceeds Rs60 million. Authorities have launched a search operation and say they are actively pursuing leads to arrest the suspects and recover the jewellery.
