Videos appearing to show iPhone boxes floating in the Strait of Hormuz have sparked widespread discussion following a cargo ship’s sinking. The footage reportedly shows sealed phone boxes and luxury perfume packages drifting among scattered shipping containers.
However, the videos have not been independently verified. Reports also caution that the footage does not confirm whether the phones were part of the sunken vessel’s cargo.
Cargo Ship Sinks After Maritime Attack
The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank near Oman’s Musandam peninsula after a projectile reportedly damaged the vessel and triggered a fire.
Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said all 21 crew members were evacuated safely. No injuries were reported.
The sinking occurred amid a surge in attacks on commercial vessels travelling through the strategic waterway. Maritime authorities have reported several incidents involving ships in the region.
Viral Footage Raises Questions
Clips circulating online appear to show small boats moving through floating debris and sealed product boxes. Some social media posts claimed the footage showed iPhones lost during the incident.
However, major outlets have not independently confirmed the clips’ location, timing or connection to the GFS Pride. AI-generated images also circulated online, adding uncertainty to claims about the cargo.
Therefore, the footage should not be treated as confirmed evidence that iPhones were aboard the ship.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and serves as a vital route for global energy shipments.
Ongoing attacks and restrictions have disrupted commercial shipping, increased risks for crews and complicated maritime operations. These disruptions can also affect transport costs and supply chains beyond the energy sector.
Although the viral footage has drawn attention to consumer products, the wider concern remains the safety of commercial vessels and the continued disruption of a major international shipping route.
