Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says Tehran’s latest plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has backing from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
The announcement adds a new dimension to efforts aimed at restoring shipping through the strategically important waterway.
Pezeshkian said the proposal was coordinated with the supreme leader during an interview with US broadcaster CBS. Iran has also outlined conditions for implementing the plan.
Iran Sets Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz
Pezeshkian said Iran would fulfil its own obligations if the United States accepts the proposal and meets its commitments.
“Coordination with the leader of the revolution (the supreme leader)… has been carried out,” Pezeshkian said.
“If the US accepts it and fulfils its obligations, we will do the same, and there will be no issue in this regard,” he added.
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the wider US-Iran conflict. Moreover, its importance extends to global energy supplies and international shipping.
Iran has said the waterway could reopen within a week if Washington eases military pressure and lifts its blockade.
Six-Member Iranian Team Given Decision-Making Authority
Pezeshkian also revealed that a six-member team has been holding discussions over the proposal.
According to the Iranian president, the team has “the authority to make decisions”.
The group includes representatives from “various organisations and bodies, including the military, the parliament and the government”.
Therefore, the proposal involves representatives from several parts of Iran’s political and state institutions.
What Does Iran Want From the United States?
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the proposal contains conditions outlined in a June memorandum of understanding.
One major demand involves the release of frozen Iranian assets. These assets are estimated to be worth at least $12 billion.
The proposal also calls for sanctions on Iranian oil to be lifted. Additionally, Iran wants an end to the US naval blockade of the country.
Recent Iranian statements have continued to link the reopening of Hormuz with these conditions.
Washington Yet to Publicly Accept Tehran’s Proposal
The United States has not publicly accepted Iran’s proposal. Reports have indicated that President Donald Trump rejected the plan.
However, the proposal remains part of ongoing diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington.
The two sides remain divided over several major issues. Meanwhile, Iran has continued presenting the reopening of Hormuz as part of a broader arrangement.
For now, the key question remains whether Washington will accept Tehran’s conditions. If an agreement is reached, the proposal could pave the way for renewed shipping through the strategic waterway.
