A sudden helmet shortage has gripped Multan and several parts of South Punjab, creating widespread disruption as markets run out of stock and riders struggle to comply with tightened traffic regulations. The Punjab government’s intensified enforcement campaign has sharply boosted demand, yet the supply chain has failed to keep pace.
Major spare parts markets in Multan reported empty shelves, with vendors confirming that wholesalers halted new deliveries without warning. Traders said the supply chain collapsed almost overnight, leaving retailers unable to restock. Prices also skyrocketed, with helmets previously priced at Rs 900 rising to Rs 4,000 within just two days.
Consequently, motorcyclists across the region face severe inconvenience. Many riders have stopped using their motorcycles to avoid fines, while students, daily-wage workers, and small traders struggle to manage routine travel. Residents say the crisis has caused widespread frustration and disrupted normal life.
Shopkeepers acknowledged that the market has never experienced such an extreme imbalance between supply and demand. They admitted that some vendors were exploiting the shortage but stressed that the core issue remains the sudden breakdown of wholesale supply.
Meanwhile, market observers criticised authorities for launching the enforcement drive without assessing available helmet stocks. They called for strict price monitoring and immediate action against hoarding to stabilise the situation.
Traffic officials defend the campaign, saying the crackdown seeks to improve road safety. However, residents argue that enforcing fines without ensuring helmet availability is counterproductive and unfair. They demand swift government intervention to restore supply and curb profiteering.
The shortage has now expanded across South Punjab, adding pressure on provincial authorities to normalise the market. Traders and commuters urge the government to regulate prices, streamline supplies, and ensure that helmets remain accessible before continuing strict enforcement.
