Dr. Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, a prominent Pakistani expert in maternal and child health, has been awarded the Officer of the Order of Canada. This prestigious accolade is one of Canada’s highest civilian honors and recognizes his remarkable contributions to global health, particularly in underserved and marginalized communities worldwide.
According to a statement from a private hospital, the Order of Canada is bestowed upon individuals who have made “extraordinary contributions to the nation.” Established in 1967 to mark Canada’s centennial year, the award has been conferred upon over 7,600 distinguished individuals from various fields.
This year, 88 individuals from diverse professions, including healthcare, arts, and public service, were selected for the Order of Canada. Among them, 24 were inducted as Officers, with Dr. Bhutta being one of the esteemed recipients.
Dr. Bhutta’s groundbreaking research and visionary leadership in maternal, newborn, and child health have significantly influenced public health policies worldwide. His work has shaped programmes implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) and initiatives targeting vulnerable populations in low-income countries.
Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Bhutta stated, “I am deeply honored by this recognition and immensely thankful to the students and colleagues who have collaborated with me over the years to address challenges faced by women and children in Pakistan and other low-income nations.”
