Mpox Case
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has recorded its sixth case of the mpox virus (formerly known as monkeypox), detected in the Lakki Marwat district, Adviser to the Chief Minister on Health, Ehtesham Ali, announced on Saturday.
According to the health official, the latest case involves a 35-year-old man from the Kot Kashmir union council in Lakki Marwat.
The patient, who had been working as a driver in Dubai for the past five years, traveled back to Pakistan on Thursday via Flight PK 284, landing at Peshawar airport.
He was immediately sent to Khyber Teaching Hospital for examination after being identified as a suspected mpox patient.
Ehtesham Ali stated that samples taken from the patient were tested at the Public Health Reference Lab, confirming the mpox diagnosis.
The patient has been informed about necessary treatment and preventive measures, including maintaining social distancing, to curb the spread of the virus. Additionally, the district health officer’s team has been instructed to closely monitor his condition.
This latest case brings the province’s current active mpox cases to just one, as all five previous patients have reportedly recovered.
Mpox, a viral infection with flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions, is generally mild but can pose severe risks for children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
It spreads primarily through close contact, making it crucial for individuals in proximity to confirmed cases to follow preventive guidelines.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the recent outbreak of mpox a public health emergency of international concern.
The Clade 1b variant, identified as the strain responsible for the current outbreak, has raised global alarm due to its high transmissibility through routine contact.
Despite concerns, the WHO has assured that the mpox outbreak is not comparable to Covid-19. As the virus is already well-studied, effective measures to control its spread are available.
KP’s health authorities remain vigilant, continuing their efforts to monitor, treat, and prevent the spread of the virus.
