One of America’s most influential pro-Israel lobbying organizations is facing renewed scrutiny after spending millions of dollars on candidates who lost their races in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and affiliated political groups spent approximately $55.3 million on unsuccessful election campaigns, according to an analysis by the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. The findings have raised questions about the effectiveness of pro-Israel political spending in Washington.
How Did AIPAC Lose $55 Million in US Elections?
The analysis found that AIPAC-linked organizations spent approximately $84.1 million during the election cycle. Nearly two-thirds of that money went toward races where their preferred candidates lost.
One of the largest setbacks occurred in Michigan, where United Democracy Project spent approximately $31.47 million in unsuccessful efforts to defeat Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.
Another major defeat came in Illinois, where millions were spent opposing Daniel Biss.
The results followed Democratic victories that secured control of both chambers of Congress.
Has AIPAC Lost Its Political Influence?
Despite the financial setbacks, AIPAC reported that more than 234 candidates it supported across both major political parties won their elections.
These victories indicate that the organization continues to maintain substantial connections within American politics.
United Democracy Project is AIPAC’s affiliated super PAC, established in 2022. It is not a new name adopted by AIPAC following the elections.
Could US Policy Toward Israel Change?
The election results have intensified debate over American military assistance to Israel and Washington’s involvement in the Iran conflict.
However, unsuccessful campaign spending does not establish that Israel controlled the US government or has now lost such control.
The central question is whether AIPAC’s expensive electoral setbacks will translate into lasting changes in American foreign policy.
