Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has reaffirmed his ambition to compete in an African Grand Prix before retiring from the sport. The Ferrari driver welcomed Formula One’s planned return to Africa, describing the opportunity as a long-standing personal dream.
Hamilton spoke ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Thursday. He said he wanted to continue racing into his forties to ensure he could participate when the African race joins the calendar.
Rwanda Set to Host Formula One’s African Return
Formula One has announced a 10-year agreement to bring racing back to Africa, with Rwanda expected to host the event in the early 2030s. Organisers plan to build a new circuit in Bugesera before scheduling the inaugural race.
The championship last held a Grand Prix in Africa in 1993, when South Africa hosted the race near Johannesburg. Consequently, the planned event would end a decades-long absence from the continent.
Hamilton has repeatedly called for Formula One to return to Africa. He believes the race could help introduce international audiences to the continent’s history, culture and potential.
However, the driver acknowledged concerns surrounding Rwanda’s selection as host. He said people should approach the issue thoughtfully while recognising the wider challenges facing countries around the world.
Hamilton Considers Extending His Racing Career
Hamilton, who currently races for Ferrari, suggested that the prospect of competing in Africa could motivate him to remain in Formula One longer. He said maintaining his fitness and delivering strong performances would influence how long he continued racing.
The British driver also highlighted the importance of educating people about Africa’s history and the lasting effects of colonialism. He hopes the Grand Prix will encourage wider discussions about the continent and its global significance.
Hamilton’s ambition reflects his personal connection to Africa and his determination to experience the historic return firsthand. Meanwhile, Formula One officials will continue preparations for the planned event as circuit development progresses.
