Saudi Arabia has reported that international Hajj pilgrim arrivals have surpassed last yearโs figures despite ongoing regional tensions. The development highlights continued global participation in the annual Islamic pilgrimage even amid geopolitical instability.
Over 1.5 Million Pilgrims Arrive in Saudi Arabia
Saudi officials confirmed that more than 1.5 million pilgrims have entered the Kingdom from abroad. The figure reflects strong global turnout ahead of the annual Hajj rituals.
“The total number of pilgrims arriving from abroad has reached 1,518,153,” said a Saudi official during a briefing.
Authorities noted that the number is expected to rise further as more pilgrims arrive in the final days before the pilgrimage begins.
Regional Conflict and Travel Disruptions
The Middle East conflict, triggered by strikes in late February, created significant disruption across the region. Tensions led to temporary airspace restrictions and increased pressure on aviation networks.
As a result, travel costs rose and flight schedules faced interruptions. Despite these challenges, airlines in the Gulf region worked to restore operations quickly.
Carriers in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain resumed most services after earlier disruptions, helping maintain pilgrimage travel flows.
Continued Flow of Pilgrims Despite Challenges
Even with geopolitical uncertainty, pilgrims continued to travel to Saudi Arabia in large numbers. Demand for Hajj participation remained strong across Muslim-majority countries and global Muslim communities.
Authorities managed increased arrivals through coordinated border, aviation, and logistics operations. These measures helped maintain smooth entry processes for international visitors.
Comparison With Previous Yearโs Hajj Numbers
Last year, Saudi Arabia recorded a total of 1,673,320 pilgrims. Out of these, 1,506,576 arrived from outside the Kingdom.
This yearโs current international arrivals have already exceeded last yearโs overseas total, signaling strong global demand for pilgrimage despite external pressures.
Significance of the Hajj Pilgrimage
Hajj remains one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims who are physically and financially able to perform it.
Each year, millions of believers travel to Makkah to complete the sacred rituals. The pilgrimage continues to represent one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world.
