United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks, urging international leaders to pursue lasting peace in the region.
Guterres said the existing ceasefire must become permanent and called for humanitarian assistance to reach Gaza on a large scale. He also stressed the need to uphold international law and establish a credible political path toward lasting regional peace.
The UN chief said Palestinians had endured enormous loss of life, displacement and destruction during the conflict. He urged the international community to address their suffering and work toward a future where Israelis and Palestinians can live with security, dignity and their rights protected.
Guterres said the October 7 anniversary should not only mark another period of mourning but should also encourage renewed efforts to create a different future for the region.
He noted that a ceasefire brokered by the United States in October 2025 had provided limited relief. However, he warned that it had not yet delivered sufficient security, humanitarian assistance or a reliable path toward recovery and peace.
The UN secretary-general’s statement comes as the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical following years of conflict. The war has caused extensive destruction and displacement across the enclave.
Guterres also called for broader regional efforts to prevent further escalation. Since the conflict began, violence has spread beyond Gaza, including fighting involving Israel, Lebanon and Iran.
The UN chief urged renewed international determination to secure a permanent ceasefire, expand humanitarian aid and pursue a political settlement capable of delivering lasting peace for the region.
